Places to see in Srinagar

Srinagar is one of the most beautiful places one can ever visit. Lots of lakes, snow covered peaks, paradise like gardens, awesome food – Srinagar has a lot on the plate – something almost impossible to get in one place anywhere else in the world.

Spend some quality time on Houseboat. See how people live their whole lives on houseboats. Srinagar has a series of lakes interconnected with each other spread in a huge area. Most prominent of these is Dal Lake. Tourists can visit Floating Market, buy some Kashmir handicrafts and enjoy delicious authentic Kashmiri meals prepared by the houseboat owners.

Tourists should explore the famous Mughal gardens – Shalimar Garden, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal. These are a group of gardens laid out during the reign of the Mughal emperors Jahangir and Shahjahan in different parts of Srinagar. These were made in typical Persian style – rectilinear layouts within walled enclosures with features like pools, fountains and canals inside the gardens. Taste the flowing water at Chashme Shahi – this will taste better than any mineral water you may have tasted anywhere.

Tulip Gardens, supposed to be the largest garden of Tulip flowers in Asia, is spread over 12 hectares. This has been a place of attraction for tourists for long. Many Hindi and other regional language films have been shot here.

Srinagar is also famous for the famous old Shankaracharya Temple. It is said Adi Guru Shankaracharya did meditation here in one of the caves situation below this temple.

Srinagar has a huge market where all sorts of Kashmiri handicrafts can be bought. There are shops selling pashmina shawls. Even saffron can be bought from shops here. It is better to buy authentic and pure saffron from the government approved shops. Chances of getting cheated by saffron selling vendors at other shops is quite high.

If it is the season for saffron cultivation, you can also make a visit to Pampore – situated on the outskirts of Srinagar. This place is  famous for saffron cultivation in the whole of Kashmir.
