Officially called Puducherry, Pondicherry is a Union Territory located some 160km south of Chennai on the east coast of India. It was one of the very few French colonies in India. French influence can, therefore, still be seen in the city, especially in the old quarters, with rues and boulevards lined with Mediterranean-style houses and bakeries.
Pondicherry is also known for Aurobindo Ashram, named after Aurobindo Ghosh, one of the early Indian revolutionary freedom fighters who turned to a spirituality later in his life.
